The Turkish Get-Up: A Step-by-Step Technique Guide

The Turkish get-up is the most technically demanding exercise in the kettlebell canon and arguably the single most complete movement pattern in all of strength training. In one unbroken sequence, it takes you from lying flat on the floor to standing upright with a weight locked out overhead — passing through seven distinct positions that collectively require shoulder stability, hip mobility, thoracic rotation, core anti-extension, single-leg strength, and coordinated balance under load. It is not a conditioning exercise, though your heart rate will disagree. It is not a flexibility drill, though it will expose every mobility limitation you have. It is a full-body integration pattern that teaches your joints and muscles to work as a unified kinetic chain, and it does so under the unforgiving constraint of a kettlebell held at arm's length above your face.
Pavel Tsatsouline, the former Soviet special forces instructor who popularized the kettlebell in the West, has called the get-up "the ultimate test of functional strength." Gray Cook, the physical therapist who developed the Functional Movement Screen, uses a version of the get-up as both an assessment and a corrective exercise. Dr. Stuart McGill, the world's foremost spine biomechanics researcher, has noted that the get-up develops anti-rotation stiffness in the lumbar spine at ranges of motion that no machine-based exercise can replicate. These are not hyperbolic endorsements. They reflect the biomechanical reality that the get-up demands competence across more movement planes and stability challenges than any other single exercise.
Before You Start: Mobility Prerequisites
The get-up requires specific mobility thresholds that, if not met, turn the exercise from a strengthening tool into an injury mechanism. You need at least 170 degrees of overhead shoulder flexion — the ability to bring your arm fully overhead without compensating by arching your lower back. Test this by lying flat on your back, pressing your lower back into the floor, and raising one arm overhead. If it does not reach the floor (or close to it) without your lower back lifting, your overhead mobility is insufficient, and you need to address thoracic extension and lat flexibility before loading this position with a kettlebell.
You also need functional hip mobility in both flexion and external rotation. The lunge-to-stand transition in the get-up requires a deep split stance with the rear knee on the ground and the front foot flat — essentially a half-kneeling position with an upright torso. If your hip flexors are too tight to achieve this position without an anterior pelvic tilt, the load will shift to your lumbar spine. Test this with a half-kneeling position: if you cannot hold it with a vertical torso and your pelvis level for 30 seconds per side, work on hip flexor stretching and half-kneeling holds before adding load overhead.
Position 1: The Setup (Fetal Roll to Press)
Lie on your back. The kettlebell sits on the floor to your right side. Roll toward it, grip the handle with both hands using a hook grip (fingers wrapped around, thumb tucked), and roll back to supine while pressing the kettlebell over your right shoulder with both hands. Once the bell is locked out overhead, release the left hand. Your right arm is now vertical, elbow fully locked, wrist neutral (not bent back), and the kettlebell resting on the back of your forearm. Your right knee is bent with your foot flat on the floor, approximately 12-16 inches from your hip. Your left leg is straight, angled out approximately 45 degrees from center. Your left arm is on the floor at roughly 45 degrees from your body.
This is not a passive position. The right shoulder is actively packed — scapula depressed and retracted, as if you are trying to put your shoulder blade in your back pocket. The right lat is engaged. The wrist is neutral, not hyperextended. The weight should feel stable and controlled, not wobbly. If the bell feels unstable here, the weight is too heavy. Reduce it and master the position before progressing.
Position 2: The Roll to Elbow
Initiate the movement by pressing your right foot into the floor while simultaneously rolling onto your left elbow. This is a diagonal pattern — right foot and left elbow work together as an anchor pair. The common mistake is to crunch upward (using the abs like a sit-up), which pulls the shoulder forward and destabilizes the overhead position. Instead, think of rolling diagonally toward the posted elbow. Your left forearm should land flat on the floor with your elbow directly under your left shoulder. Your chest should be open, not rounded forward. Your eyes are on the kettlebell throughout — and they stay there for the entire ascent.
At this position, three points are in contact with the floor: your left elbow, your right foot, and your left heel (the straight leg). The kettlebell is still locked out overhead with a packed shoulder. Your torso is at approximately 45 degrees from the floor. If your left elbow is too far from your body, you will feel strain in the left shoulder; bring it closer until it is directly under the shoulder joint.
Position 3: The Tall Sit (Elbow to Hand)
From the elbow, press your left hand into the floor and extend the left arm, lifting your torso to a tall sitting position. Your left arm is now fully extended, hand flat on the floor, fingers pointing away from your body (approximately perpendicular to your spine). Your right arm remains locked out overhead. Your chest is open, your thoracic spine is extended, and your left shoulder is packed just like the right — scapula depressed, lat engaged. You are now supported by three points: left hand, right foot, left heel.
Position 4: The High Bridge
From the tall sit, drive your right foot into the floor and lift your hips off the ground into a high bridge position. Your weight is supported by your left hand and your right foot. Your left leg is still straight, heel on the floor, and your hips should be fully extended — squeeze the right glute hard to achieve a straight line from right shoulder to right knee. The common error is insufficient hip extension: a sagging bridge position places excessive stress on the lumbar spine and makes the next transition (sweeping the leg through) much harder. Drive those hips up until your pelvis is level or slightly above the line between your supporting hand and foot.
This position is the most challenging part of the get-up for most people. It requires significant glute and hip flexor strength, thoracic extension, and the confidence to support a load overhead while your body is in a bridge. If this position feels precarious, it means your hip extension strength needs work. Practice glute bridges and single-leg hip thrusts as accessory work.
Position 5: The Leg Sweep to Half-Kneeling
While holding the high bridge, sweep your left leg back underneath your body, placing your left knee on the floor directly below (or slightly behind) your left hip. You are now in a half-kneeling position: right foot flat on the floor in front, left knee on the floor behind, left hand still on the floor for support. This transition requires hip mobility, spatial awareness, and enough clearance (from the high bridge) to pass the leg through without catching your foot on the floor.
The key detail: your left knee should land in line with your left hand, creating a straight line from hand to knee on the left side. Many people place the knee too far forward, which creates an unstable base for the next transition. Once the knee is planted, pause and verify three things: the kettlebell is still directly over the right shoulder (not drifting forward), the right arm is locked out and the shoulder is packed, and the left shin is roughly perpendicular to the right shin, creating an approximately 90-degree angle between your two thighs when viewed from above.

Position 6: The Windshield Wiper (Align the Shin)
From the half-kneeling position with the left hand still on the floor, rotate your left shin so that it points straight back, perpendicular to an imaginary line drawn between your two knees. This is sometimes called the "windshield wiper" because the lower leg sweeps from an angled position to a straight-back position. Without this adjustment, the next transition to standing involves a twisted stance that loads the knee asymmetrically.
Once the shin is aligned, lift your left hand off the floor and bring your torso upright. You are now in a true half-kneeling position: torso vertical, arms overhead (right arm with kettlebell, left arm can drop to your side), front shin vertical, back knee on the ground. This is the moment where many people realize their quadricep or hip flexor on the kneeling side is tighter than they thought — the upright torso position demands that the rear hip flexor is long enough to allow the pelvis to sit neutral. An anterior pelvic tilt here means the hip flexor is pulling the pelvis forward, and the lumbar spine is compensating.
Position 7: The Stand
From the half-kneeling position, drive through the front foot and stand up. This is a lunge-pattern movement — identical to the concentric phase of a reverse lunge. Push through the right heel, extend the right knee and hip, and bring the left leg forward to meet the right. You are now standing with the kettlebell locked out overhead in your right hand, feet shoulder-width apart, knees straight, hips fully extended, right arm vertical, and left arm at your side. Congratulations: you have completed the ascent phase of the Turkish get-up.
Now reverse the entire sequence. Step back with the left leg into a reverse lunge, lower the left knee to the ground, place the left hand on the floor, sweep the left leg through, lower your hips to the ground, lower from hand to elbow, lower from elbow to flat on your back. The descent is not a relaxation — it is a controlled negative of every position. Every alignment cue, every packed shoulder, every eye-on-the-bell reminder applies in reverse. The descent is where most injuries occur, because fatigue and complacency combine to produce rushed transitions and sloppy positions.
Weight Progression and Programming
Start with no weight at all. Practice the seven positions as a movement flow, pausing at each position for five seconds. Once you can execute five flawless repetitions per side with no weight, add the shoe-balance test described earlier. Once you pass the shoe test consistently, begin with the lightest kettlebell available — typically 8 kg (18 lb) for women and 12 kg (26 lb) for men. These are not ego weights. The get-up is a skill exercise, not a maximal-effort exercise. The weight should feel manageable enough that you can focus entirely on positional quality, not survival.
Progress the weight in 4 kg increments: 8→12→16→20→24 kg. Do not jump more than one size at a time. A useful rule: if you can perform three controlled repetitions per side with perfect form and no compensatory movement at a given weight, you are ready to test the next weight up for a single repetition per side. The get-up is not a high-repetition exercise. One to three repetitions per side, with 30-60 seconds of rest between reps, for three to five total reps per side per session, is sufficient training volume. More than five reps per side in a session introduces fatigue that compromises the positional quality that makes the exercise valuable.
Programming the get-up as a warm-up or movement preparation drill before a strength training session is an effective approach endorsed by StrongFirst and the RKC system. Two to three singles per side with a moderate weight (approximately 60-70% of your best get-up weight) before your main lifts provides shoulder stabilization activation, hip mobility work, thoracic extension, and core engagement — all in approximately 8-10 minutes. Alternatively, the get-up can serve as a standalone practice day, typically programmed two to three times per week on non-heavy-lifting days.
Common Errors and How to Fix Them
Pressing off the floor instead of rolling: The transition from supine to elbow should be a roll, not a sit-up. If you are flexing your spine forward to get up, you are losing shoulder position and generating force through a pattern that cannot scale to heavy weights. Cue: push the working-side foot into the floor and think "roll toward the elbow," not "sit up."
Losing the packed shoulder: The most dangerous error. When the shoulder blade elevates (shrugs toward the ear), the rotator cuff loses its mechanical advantage, and the shoulder joint becomes vulnerable under load. The shoulder should feel pulled "down and back" throughout the entire get-up. If you lose the pack at any point, stop, reset the shoulder, and continue. If you cannot maintain the pack, the weight is too heavy.
Looking away from the kettlebell: Your eyes track the bell from the floor to standing and back down. The moment you look away, your body loses its primary spatial reference for the load's position, and compensatory movement patterns emerge. The one exception: in the final standing position, you may bring your eyes forward to level, as the bell is directly overhead and well-stabilized.
Rushing the transitions: The get-up is a slow exercise. Each position is a destination, not a waypoint. Pause at every position for at least two seconds, verify your alignment, check the shoulder pack, confirm the bell's position, and then — only then — move to the next position. A five-second pause at each of the seven positions is not excessive during the learning phase. Speed is the enemy of quality in the get-up, and quality is the entire point.
The Turkish get-up is not glamorous. It does not lend itself to social media clips or personal records. It is slow, methodical, and demands a level of concentration that most people find uncomfortable. But the strength it builds — integrated, reflexive, applicable to every other movement pattern in the gym and in life — is unmatched by any other single exercise. Master the seven positions, respect the progression, and let the get-up teach you what your body can do when every joint and muscle works together under a single purpose.
