Body weight is a single number that conflates four distinct compartments: muscle, fat, water, and bone. A 200-pound person at 12% body fat is in a fundamentally different metabolic state than a 200-pound person at 30% body fat. Scale weight alone cannot distinguish between them.

The gold standard for body composition measurement is DEXA scanning — dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. It measures fat mass, lean mass, and bone mineral density with region-specific precision. The scan takes 10 minutes, costs $50-$150, and delivers the most accurate picture available outside of a research lab.

Bioelectrical impedance (BIA) — the technology in smart scales and handheld devices — measures body fat by sending a small electrical current through your body and estimating fat mass from resistance. Accuracy varies widely: hydration status, meal timing, and exercise can swing readings by 3-5%. Use BIA for trend tracking, not absolute values.

Skinfold calipers, when used by a trained technician, deliver accuracy within 3-4% of DEXA. The Durnin-Womersley four-site protocol (biceps, triceps, subscapular, suprailiac), validated by researchers at the University of Glasgow, is the most widely used method with over 5,000 citations in the sports science literature. A 2020 reliability study from the National Strength and Conditioning Association found inter-tester variability of up to 5.8% body fat — which is why using the same technician every time is critical.

For practical tracking, the simplest metrics are often the best: waist circumference (measured at the navel), waist-to-hip ratio, and progress photos taken under consistent lighting. A decreasing waist circumference with stable body weight indicates fat loss and muscle gain — the holy grail of body recomposition.

Weigh yourself daily, at the same time (morning, after bathroom, before eating), and track the seven-day average. Daily weight fluctuates by 2-5 pounds due to water retention, glycogen status, and GI contents. The weekly average smooths this noise and reveals the actual trend.
