Seven of twelve sets overstated their resistance by more than 20%. The worst offender claimed 50 pounds of resistance but delivered 31 at full stretch. This matters because progressive overload requires accurate loading, and if you cannot trust the number printed on the band, you cannot track or program your training with any precision.

Dr. Brad Schoenfeld, professor of exercise science at Lehman College and one of the most prolific hypertrophy researchers in the field, has noted that resistance bands create a unique loading profile compared to free weights. "The ascending resistance curve matches the strength curve of many exercises better than constant-load tools," he wrote in a 2019 review published in SAGE Open Medicine. This variable resistance is the reason bands belong in every serious training program — not as a replacement for barbells and dumbbells, but as a complementary tool that fills specific gaps.

How We Tested

Our testing protocol covered four categories: resistance accuracy, durability, versatility, and value. We measured resistance at three elongation points using a Chatillon DFE II digital force gauge, testing each band five times and averaging the readings. To test durability, we subjected each band to 1,000 full-range stretch cycles on a motorized rig — mimicking roughly six months of regular training — and re-measured resistance afterward. Three certified strength and conditioning specialists used every set for at least two weeks in their own training. Band Care and Longevity
